Ambivelance, Heartthrobs, and More

The escapades in DC this past weekend were full of birthdays, good music, and dancing.

It started on Friday night at CafĂ© Asia – restaurant by day, club by night. It was the first party held there with the brand new Martin Audio sound system. It was exciting not only because Heartthrob and Konrad Black were spinning, but because it was at a cool new spot with great sound. Plus, it happened to be several of our friend’s birthdays.

I picked up the DJs at Dulles earlier that day. Heartthrob (Jesse) arrived first, straight from Berlin. We waited about an hour for Konrad Black (Todd) to get off and plane and through customs, he flew in from Amsterdam. As Jesse and I waited for Todd we talked about DC, Berlin, his upcoming shows, and more. He was super nice and a champ for waiting with me because I knew he was tired from traveling.

We found Todd and were on our way to drop them off at the hotel. Luckily, the weather was absolutely wonderful that day, 80s and low humidity. We happened to drive through the most beautiful parts of DC to get to the hotel. They both kept commenting how green, beautiful, and historic it was! Jesse even said he would love to live here – if he had a normal life.

I dropped them off and arranged with my sister, SC, to pick them up and take to dinner. They wanted something “Americana.” They went to Quill at The Jefferson. What else embodies Washington, DC and America more than a place oozing historical details?

Not only were they delightfully friendly, but they were also quite comical, according to SC. Todd was so impressed with the city he jokingly asked if we wore powdered wigs on the weekends.

Fisher played the opening set and Heartthrob went on the decks next to spin his live set. The club was packed, the bartender generous, and everyone was dancing.

I went back to pick up Todd, he had some last minute downloading to do as he forgot to bring his laptop! Thankfully, Jesse travels with two and was able to loan him one. He went on after Jesse and closed out the night with some unbelievable tracks, even Jesse got on the dance floor at the end to party with the rest of us.

But the weekend didn’t stop there.

The very next night mnmlife and Surrender Dorothy brought Ambivalent to the Patio at Fur. If you liked Heartthrob and Konrad Black, you were going to LOVE Ambivalent. From the beginning he was spinning such groovy techno, like nothing I ever heard before. The whole time I was dancing I was thinking we have to have him again. His girlfriend came with him from New York and said it was the most fun she’s ever had seeing him play a gig. mnmlife resident DJ, Dave Martin, said it was the best party at the Patio to date, and it really was.

So, if you missed this weekend full of unbelievable music, festivities, and friends, don’t worry, there is always next week!
